Non-human powers

'I really do sometimes think that you have powers that are not human', Nana said unexpectedly, dropping his freshly ironed pants in the drawer. Daniel looked up in alarm at his seventh nanny (- this year, he didn't count in the ones from the years before because he had lost count) and then quickly made an innocent face.
'Powers?' he asked.
'Non-human powers.' Nana stressed each word as she turned around to face him. She had been warned ten-year-old Daniel had worked his way through more nannies than his mother's nerves could cope with, but it was only recently she had started to notice something was off.
'When that Carter boy nicked your Nintendo DS you suddenly had it back the next day, without him even coming near you again. That time when your dad asked you to mow the lawn it was suddenly all mown when you two went outside. When Milly was chasing you around the kitchen she suddenly tripped and broke her ankle, while you were no where to be found. And...' Nana's voice wavered. Daniel was staring at her with an intensity she was sure was not normal for a child. She decided not to bring up the fact that she had just heard from the neighbour that that dreadful Carter boy was dead. Found floating in the pond with the cover of the Nintendo DS still in his pocket. Nor did she want to tell him that her things had been disapearing, with a bloody fingerprint left in the exact same place. A fingerprint the size of a child's. She eyed Daniel nervously.
'I'm just quick,' said Daniel icily. He stared at her intently. As he thought, she had been too dumb to get his warnings. But now it seemed that it was time to get a new Nana.
The neighbourhood was getting too crowded.
